Still happy sewing,brides gown made in satin with lace trim.

dollyhandknits: My hobby and joy in life is knitting and dollshouses,but knitting is the one I follow more. I learnt to knit some 45 years ago. My grandfather learnt to knit from his mother and after the first world war he took it up again to give himself a calming hobby of an evening. As a child I would watch this man create socks and gloves and sometimes crochet beautiful blankets for his grandchildren. I assumed it was all in ones head as I never saw him with a pattern,so one cold evening I asked if I could learn. A few days later my aunt who lived with my grandparents gave me a pattern (never had I seen one of these lol) 2 paires of needles and some white baby wool. I just looked, What did it all mean.? Grandad helped me to cast on,and then he suggested I read the abbreviations to work out what the pattern was asking me to do,he later confessed he was not at all sure what it all meant. So thats how I began and a few months later I had made a Jacket,hat and booties, wow was I proud. Now I love to knit everything I can, happy hands are knitting hands. 08/02/2012 by dollyhandknits
